Please help! Wierd sounds from engine bay
« on: July 04, 2016, 04:31:56 PM »
Hello,
I have an e36 318is with the m42b18 engine.
Rescently i noticed an annoying soud, which sounds like rattling of some metal. At first i thought it's the dust shield on the brakes that was broken in one spot and i assumed it was the problem, i removed it and the rattling is still there. I dont know exactly how long the rattling is there, it just rescently started to annoy me, and i checked in the engine bay -sure enough i found what i was looking for... not in a good way though.
The sound is very loud (i can hear it with my windows rolled up) it comes from the top of the engine, it sounds like the chain going loose and hitting the head?
It's there when i start ir and never goes away untill i hit 3krpm or more. It pulls nice, doesent have any power loss that i would notice.

Had anyone had similiar problems? I can't sleep knowing now that i drove it like a madman, and the heart of my car is not alright. Would the chain tensioner change suffice? Or is it not the problem, but the chain itself is the problem?

The car shows 245k km/s on the clock. I don't know if it's real, but from usage perspective most of the wearing parts seem to indicate it's real. I changed Fully sinthetic oil 12kkm/s earlier(with oil filter and air filter) and plan to cgange the oil at 15k mark.
Is it only the chain tensioner or do i need to change the whole chain system? If so whats the cost? The tensioner here where i live costs 30€. Its swag one.

Sorry for my english, it's not my native language.

I'd start with the tensioner and see if that fixes it, they're cheap and easy to replace in about 5 minutes.

Be carefull, i drove with a loud racket and the timing chain destroyed engine.  the tensioner is a good first step and easy to replace yourself.  Take a big screwdriver  and hold to your ear and move tool around the engine and listen for racket sounds.
