new ish here... charged m42
« on: February 11, 2014, 01:46:29 PM »
hi all

typing from the UK  :)

I have a m42 that's super charged currently swapping it from my e36 coupe into a newer cleaner e36 compact.  currently running just over 200bhp at the crank with shell 'v' power fuel and water injection (no meth yet)

Ill try and get some pics up asap

looking for new ideas all the time, looking into cams at the moment if anyone has added cams to a supercharged m42 id like your input :D

Welcome to the club! I have no firsthand experience with cams, so I'll leave that to more informed members.

Post some pics - we love the E36 Compact here at M42club, though it wasn't a really popular car here. Did you join 318ti.org as well?

thanks guys, yeah they are m5 rims, originally turbines but without the covers :D  waiting for a m44 loom and ecu to turn up as the m42 set-up is just not playing ball being in a newer car.

Why is the m42 loom not playing ball?

Are you just getting rid of the afm?

well, we're not to sure, all ran sweet in the old shell but seems that the ecu is looking for something the new shell hasn't got. it was one of the fist IS coupes and pre ews.  tested everything, checked everything its either a faulty ecu which is unlikely as was fine before and this seems the best was forward and  agood excuse to out the airflow. :D Got a m44 loom and ecu on it way for £30 bargain i thought, then Ive just got to send off the ecu to sort the ews and make the loom fit.  anyone know if its been done before ??

bit of progress,  got the m44 loom all fitted up very straight forward just need to change one of the temp sensors for the m44 item.  best way to get rid of the air flow in my opinion.  now running a bigger m50 2.5 maf and volvo t5 injectors.  runs nice just needs to have a run on the rolling road to set fuel up :D

Awesome car, I like the rims as well! A great place to get cams is Vac motorsport. Vac can get you pretty much any set up you want. The price for vac's inhouse cams is very reasonable ($750) compared to some of the other more expensive brands like cat cams etc (which they also have). Another option, you can take the specs of the cam you want and find a place to regrind your existing ones to match. This will be the cheapest option.

Also, did you know The M42 has adjustable cams from the factory?  Unfortunately though i have never heard of any meaningful gains being achieved by adjustment with out doing extensive dyno tuning/engine modification.
