WTB: M42 ~ Campbell, CA
« on: August 30, 2014, 05:04:43 PM »
I have a 91 318i convertible with a broken odometer. If I had to guess the car probably has over 200k miles. Timing chain is loose and ticking, and I was quoted $1300 for a timing chain replacement. It seems it's reached its limit for adjustment or tightening. I would do it myself if I had the time, but it seems like a better option would be to get my m42 rebuilt or buy a low mile engine for a direct swap. Please let me know if anyone local has a low mile complete engine, or knows where I can get mine rebuilt for a reasonable price. Thanks!

It's not hard to replace the tensioner. You might have an original one, BMW replaced it with the improved M44 part. I've done a few myself. If you can twist a 17mm wrench, you can do it.

Have you pulled the cyl head cover to see what the cam gears look like yet?
