Brake Light Switch troubleshooting

When the brake pedal is pressed in as far as it will go, the brake lights sometimes go on and off...mostly they do nothing at all. When the pedal is down, I can push the end of the brake light switch to make the brake lights turn on and off as they should, but when I release the pedal and press down again, nothing happens. What could this be?

check to see that the pedal arm it making contact with the switch. The bracket that holds the switch can bend easily. I would start there.
