alternator pulley BAD SOUNDS

So yesterday i was changed the waterpump on my 95  318i,  and i mistaked alternator tensioner for belt tensioner,  now theres a real loud anooying /sqeeling sound coming from that area  which gets worse with rpm,  just wondering if i might of tighened it and broke it??  Also it has 370k  /  is there any way to have no power steering  i.e  smaller belt or a pulley replacment?   Sorry i just registered
