Oil Non Return Valve?
« on: November 01, 2012, 07:23:35 PM »
i just did a quick search just now because im in the middle of fixing a cracked head and i found a thread a couple days ago that said something about a valve between the head and block and not to lose it because if you do you wont have oil pressure.

anyways, i have a 91 318i like most people on this forum it seems like. i have already pulled the head and im getting it fixed or getting a replacement in the next couple weeks and in the mean time i would like to get everything ready to install the head.

while removing the head i found a thread that gave decent instructions on how to remove the head and i followed it pretty closely to make sure i didnt miss anything, well he mentioned something about an oil return valve between the head and block and said that it will fall out if your not careful and to make sure its installed otherwise you'll never have oil pressure. however he had a 93 318i and i wasnt sure if this was something that bmw even used on a 91 or if i do have a valve and it fell out.

either way i cannot for the life of me find it on my car. if someone has a decent picture of where its located in the engine and if they can verify that i do in fact have one or not it would be hugely appreciated.

edit- heres the thread i found that i was using for reference. and i believe hes referencing something between the head and block not the lower timing case? just looking for a couple people to verify so i dont explode my motor

If you could reference the thread we could tell you for sure, but I presume you are referring to items 5, 6, and 7. Number 8 is the circlip that holds it in the timing case cover, so it's not likely to fall out and you not notice it.

There is no way that the oil pressure regulator check valve can fall out of the timing case. It has been updated though, and the new design is less prone to jamming, so you might want to think about replacing it.
