Check engine light won't flash
« on: March 17, 2011, 01:39:56 AM »
Ok last summer i rebuilt the m42, complete overhaul with engine, tranny ecu and harness out. I put everything back in and got it running. It ran good until last month when check engine light shows up. I was trying to retrieve the fault code by doing the stomp test. But the light wouldn't even blink at all. I've tried disconnecting the battery. I searched around on this forum, but it seems i'm the only one with this problem. Suggestions?

I think disconnecting the battery will wipe out the stored error codes.  If the CE light comes on when the key is in position II, you might have a bad TPS or you're just doing it wrong.

I usually have some trouble getting codes myself.  Takes me a few tries, and often I have to do more than five stomps to get it right.

just in case someone has this problem and needs an answer:

if your Throttle Position Switch (TPS) is not functional, the ECU doesn't know you're stomping on the gas pedal, and thus cannot blink out the codes.
If you have a constant Check Engine light and the stomp test is not working, change your TPS sensor and try again.

To add to this very old bump, a poorly adjusted throttle cable can do the same thing and prevent the car from thinking it is at WOT pedal position. Overcome this by having a helper key up the car (or you do it quickly) and actuate the throttle body by hand. Clearly you should adjust the throttle cable too.
