Fuel Pump Sound
« on: October 25, 2012, 11:25:38 PM »
I have a 1991 318ic that I have been sorting since buying it in July. This forum has been a great resource to make diagnosing and fixing my small problems much easier.  My current problem is a fuel issue.  My car just died a week ago. I listened for the fuel pump to make any sound with the cover off. No go, so I pulled it out.  It would not go with 12V hooked up to it from a battery, but when I switched polarity it sputterd to life and then spun nicely. The pump was a factory pump, and the mesh on the intake had some very fine particles on it. I decided to get a new pump and installed it with out any problem.  I also replaced the fuel filter. The new pump started the car and it ran great.  But after about 100 miles the car quit again. I pulled the pump and no paritcles on the intake screen. I reinstalled the pump and it works but seems to have a sound when on.  Not real loud, but it is audible when the cover is over the pump. Is this normal? How loud should a good fuel pump be? Thanks for any advice!

Well I pulled the pump, let it run a little, it sounded fine. Then reinstalled and put the cover plate on. Nice and quiet. We shall see if there will be more trouble down the road!
