Getrag 240 versus 260
« on: March 01, 2011, 01:05:30 AM »
I'm about to put some more ponies into my vert and was wondering about peoples success with the existing 240 trani in cars over 200 whp?
I can't seem to find the weight of the 240 and 260 transmissions, any body know?
I know that the Z4 6speed trani is a possible retro fit but I haven't been able to find any info on the required work involved.

I'd replace the small case diff, if you haven't done that already.  I haven't heard that the 240 is a weak point in the drive train, and from my research BMW's later 4-cyl transmissions aren't much stronger than the 240.

The 260 (or any 6-cyl transmission) will bolt up, but the engine mounting angle is different for the six-cyl cars.  The result is that the transmission will be twisted slightly to the passenger side from what I've heard.  I'll bet you could modify the transmission mounts and bend the shifter a bit to make it work, but I'd stick with a fresher 240 or go with a slightly stronger e36 M42 or M44 transmission.  I think it's a Getrag G5S?

Does the Z4 6 speed just bolt up to the M42? Where can I find conversion information and specs on that transmission?

Thanks!

I still have the small case 427 lsd and was thinking of changing to 391 or 410 med case. Appreciate the comments on the 240. The 260 trani requires a different drive shaft but I have that covered if I decide to go that route.

I have a 3.73 from an e30 325is in mine, I'm pretty happy with the compromise.  It's not quick like the higher ratios though...I'll bet your 4.27 gives a definite advantage in acceleration.  Mine spends a lot of time on the highway, and I'm not the accel junkie I used to be.

I'm pretty happy with the 427 and 12+ whp but with my new engine going in I'm not sure I need the high ratio. I do mostly city driving where the 427 shines, highway driving is not the best.

Thanks for that.

Well I found what I really want but 3900 euro is a little out of my budget for the moment.

DO NOT put a gearbox with straight cut gears into a road car. You know why most race cars are so loud? Aside from exhaust? its the straight cut gears. Each and every one of those 5 gears are straight cut. I think BMW reverse gears in road cars are straight cut. Ever notice how that gear is louder than forward gears? Imagine that, amplified, all the time.
