Introduction!
« on: September 20, 2011, 02:48:59 PM »
Hey everybody!

I just purchased a 91' 318is last night and I'm ready to hit the road! My two previous cars were VW's (I'm new to Bimmers) so I've been checking out the forum and already I'm learning a lot. I've noticed a small oil leak, the interior is kind of rough, and the brakes and tires will need to be redone, but all in all I'm looking forward to driving the car. I dropped it off at my mechanic's shop so he can give it a more thorough inspection. I'll post up some pictures when I get the car back!

Welcome to the Club!

Much of this car will be very familiar to you...if you're used to VWs.  The German design ideal seems to be very similar at both places.  BMW has better parts support but much more expensive dealers.

BMW sport seats are rare in good shape.  Rebuild them or find a decent used set.  The oil leaks are non-stop.  Check the oil filter housing

Check the upper oil pan bolts by dropping the lower pan & pull the cam cover to check for pointy cam gears.  Stop the car & get it towed if the needle even flirts with the red zone.  Any overheating will mean a new head.

Save any Rabbit/Golf/Jetta 4-bolt rims you have for this car, they bolt right on.  Much of the Motronic fuel injection stuff is very similar to Digifant...all Bosch stuff.

Enjoy the balance that this car has.  Even though a ragged 8-valve GTI will give it a run for its money, it's a very appealing package.  The M42 e30 (along with the e36 M3, 2002 and e9) are the best of BMW IMHO.
