im planning to remove my oil pan soon and gonna replace the gasket and i was wondering whats better? a paper gasket or permatex silicone? i would like to hear some opinions?

Both. I do a layer on the block then stick the gasket on there so it sticks and you can line it up nice and easy. Then a layer on the pan and bolt it up. I do a real thin layer so that you dont have a bunch squeeze out into the oil pan.

dont forget the thread locker on those upper oil pan bolts that are inside the pan.

No idea, my m42 is stuffed into my '75 2002. I did my pan job when I had the motor sitting on an engine stand. I think you will want to disconnect the motor mounts and jack up the engine to get as much room between it and the cross member and then start pulling bolts. There are more than you think, including some hiding back inside the bell housing. you may also need a rubber mallet to break it free. mine was stuck on there pretty good. Good luck

ok so i replaced the upper and lower pan gasket and also but some permatex on bothsides of the gaskets and put locetite on the bolts and its still leaking a bit. :mad: the drip seems to lead down to the right side of the lower oil pan but i can point it out where its coming from. anyone have any ideas wheres the leak coming from?? plz help

Did you do the o ring on the dipstick tube? If it's not that I would guess the oil filter housing to block seal, or the seals on the timing cover.

i put the same o-ring on the dip stick back on? hmm maybe ill do the oil filter housing next. How hard is it to replace the timing cover gasket?

Bimmer: Not too complex just time consuming. You can find a really good write up here by Brandon Purcell: http://www.esatclear.ie/~bpurcell/318istimingchain.html

If you have an oil leak on the right side (US drivers side) then your best bet is what M5WannaB suggested. Remove the alternator, unbolt the oil filter housing, replace gasket and two O rings ... replace filter housing and alternator. I understand that this particular piece when leaking can look like timing cover gaskets or the front crank seal. I would do that first and see if it clears up your leak - I mean 20 bucks in parts and a lot less time involved.

BTW: There are three o rings on the dip stick too ... I just purchased those too from Blunttech for cheap ... I think I'll be doing the above shortly as well.

ok i look at my oil filter housing and it seems to have a seepage on the bottom of the housing. ill replace the gasket in a couple of days. and i just gave it an oil change. what two o rings on the housing are you talking about. and when i took out my dipstick it only had one o ring. wont three o rings make the bolt on the dipstick tube to high for it to be screwed in?

well its not the oil filter housing gasket cuz i replaced it and its still leaking. what do i do now?

Bimmer - I had the same issue ... the M42 seems to be a leaky bastard. I just replaced the same gasket (I had newer O rings), dipstick gaskets, oil pressure relief valve and timing/lower oil pan gasket. My guess is that the oi pressure relief valve failed then (#10) ... try tightening it up or get the updated part.

oh ok thanks bro i appreciate the help and i will try those thinngs. but yesterday i got under and look real good and the crank sensor was covered in oil and it seems to be leaking trail of oil behind the crank pully. could it be the front crank seal?
