What are people using as an upgrade for their M42's in E30's? I've read that M50 mounts can be used but does any one have a tried and tested solution?

I'll be watching this thread...those OEM mounts are expensive!  I've heard the e28 535i mounts are adequate.  They need modified, the mount tangs are in the wrong place.

they are a bit stiffer and you just need to grind off the tang

I ran E28 535i engine mounts (solid rubber) for a number of years, mainly  because they cost like 60% less then the M42 ones (grease-filled). An incredible amount of engine noise & vibration transmits into the cabin when using the E28 mounts, and I eventually sucked it up & went back to M42 mounts. For a street car, the stock ones are the only good choice in my opinion. The M42 is a rough running little motor, and that's why the stock ones are pricey hydraulic ones.

M10 mounts are a direct drop in and about $10 each. I didnt like the extra vibration though so I bought some m42 mounts.

I have a set of Vorshlag poly mounts too if anyone is interested in trying those out. Ill sell em at a heck of a deal because they arent doing me anything sitting on the shelf!

I think you can have a cheaper mount than stock, but I dont think its an uprated one.
   The stock ones, while admittedly pricey, do the best job,  methinks.
For a road-going car,  I hasten to add.   A track car is a different beast, I've seen some with aluminum blocks instead of rubber or urethane.  hold on, its gonna be a bumpy ride:)

Thanks for the replies chaps.

This is for a race/track car so vibration and noise isn't a problem. How did you find the M10 mounts durability wise?

What needs modding on the M5 mount, any one got any photos?

I didn't drive with the M10 mounts long enough to find out the limit of durabilit.

In a track car it would be less of an issue, felt more like my friends M20 racecar with solid aluminum mounts. At higher RPMs it was much better. Just down low at 1000 or so it was bad.

I hope you aren't at 1000rpm at the track :)
