Relay Holders?
« on: May 18, 2011, 01:17:31 PM »
Can someone direct me to a part number or source for the plastic part that holds the orange and white relays that are in the engine wiring harness?

Mine are kind of sad looking.

Thanks in advance!

Do you have an m42? Looks like you do. If so you are missing the wiring cover and back plane when the 3 main relays connect to plus the those 2 round plugs. Parts 1 and 3, maybe 2.

Thanks! That's what I was looking for. Looks like I'll be ripping one of those out in the future, or replacing the relays with the kind that have the little mounting tabs on the back.

He does have an M42, but it's in a 1600.  I did a double-take too, until I remembered.  Clay, the mount for the e30 M20 is likely better for you; it's very similar in function, much more common & has a nice little integrated cover as well.  I can take some pics if you like.  I'm pretty sure I have an extra e30 M20 harness around somewhere if you need some bits off it.

Dude, that is SO not heresy.  It's not like you're tossing an LS1 in there!  That's exactly what BMW would have done if they had a budget in the mid '60s.  Once they had some money to play with later on...the '02 rapidly got sportier...the ti, tii and turbo all showed more of where they wanted to take BMW.   The M10 is a great motor (especially once it's 'squirted with the e21 bits), but the Bosch systems on the M42 are a   dramatic improvement to the '02's finicky Kugelfischer mechanical FI or a   dual carb setup as far as tractability, emissions and all-round reliability.

On a related note, a personal ambition of mine is to update a 2000cs with an M42.  Perfect four-cyl balance with that quirky duck-tail and psychedelic front end would be ideal.  It'd need some updated e36 electronics too!

You mean like this?

2000cs with an M42

I'd love to do that, too, but I'd go with the 5 speed!

That's inspirational (and also totally in the spirit of BMW!).  I was worried that I'd be the first one to try it...so I'm glad that someone else figured out the hard bits.
