M42 runs but idles very high
« on: February 13, 2011, 04:21:49 PM »
I've been working on a project 318i for about 7 weeks now and finally got it to the point where I can start it.  The engine was damaged (broken timing chain) so rather than attempt to fix it I dropped in a 115k mile M42 that hadn't been ran in at least 4+ years.  Today I finished off routing the vacuum hoses (per "mess under intake" thread) and added coolant and fuel.  At first it had some issues starting up and I had an injector that had somehow popped off of the rail.  After resolving the injector issue I sprayed some starting fluid into the intake runners and put it all back together.  I have my vacuum hoses ran like this (taken from another thread):

From ICV to port at bottom of rubber bellows.
From valve cover to large intake under the throttle body.
The port on the side of the TB is connected to the fuel tank vapor canister.
From FPR on fuel rail to small fitting on bottom left side of TB

Try #2 it finally fired up after cranking for a good 12-15 seconds, with me pumping the gas just to get some air in it.  Once it started up it sounded OK but it would idle VERY high at 3.5k RPMS.  It wouldn't bounce around, it just stayed pegged at that RPM.  There was some smoking around the exhaust side from fluids that were spilled during the course of the install so I shut it down after it ran for 45 seconds or so.

Try #3 it started right up without much cranking, maybe 3-5 seconds.  Again, it idled very high at 3.5k.  I revved it a little and it still sounded OK but I shut it down again.

Any ideas on what this could be?  I assume maybe a vacuum leak somewhere, but I'm not completely certain.  Any suggestions on how to move forward from here is greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance!

You checked the throttle body & TPS, right?  If that's stuck open a little bit it'll run a very high idle.  The ICV tends to stick as well, but I'm not thinking it can get up to 3.5K by itself.  Sounds like your vac lines are correct.
