Torquing your valve cover bolts.

I have read about a lot of guys accidently stripping out the bolt holes in the head, when tightening the valve cover bolts..

According to the trusty Bentley manual, the torque value for the valve cover bolts is 10 Nm, or (89 in-lb)


I was wondering how many of you guys use a torque wrench to ensure you were not over torquing those bolts?

i just ordered one of these.

i already have a 5-50in/lb torque wrench, i am hoping to not over torque any of the small bolts that go into the head, as i re-assemble the motor again.

I just make them a little more than hand-tight.  If they weep I twist them a little more.  An inch-pound wrench is a great idea though.

Can't believe there are more than a hand full of us who do own one.  I have always test torqued all of the valve cover bolts and the lower pan bolts before assembly.  That way I can Time-sert any striped holes on the bench rather than in the car.

seems like a small price to pay, considering the consequences.... and the pain in the butt i have seen others go though.

I have torqued them in steps when I changed the gaskets, the last step was about a week or so with the engine hot (so the gaskets were softer).
