Greetings 94 318is newbie with auto problem
« on: December 06, 2010, 09:50:39 PM »
Congratulations on a good forum, I have googled solutions from this site before.  I have a fair bit of experience with my car and hope to share.  In interim, I have a problem that just has me stumped...

Car is a Euro model, coupe, with 4 speed auto.

A couple of months ago, I was changing my tie rod ends and getting the alignment good. While under the car, I cleaned up and remember giving the crank sensor a good clean with a rag. Since then, my sport selector swich won't engage Sport. The car starts in snow, which is flashing, but will let me select E. The car drives fine, but the fault is bugging me.

I took it to a shop to get the codes read. The guy was busy and doesn't know me from Robin. He said it was the switch and couldn't reset the fault code. So I drove away not really the wiser...

Switch is $170, so I got another second hand one for $25 - I have three now, all of which show the same - which took me down the path that something is telling the auto computer to put the car in limp mode.

First things I did was change the auto fluid. It wasn't low, but looked and smelled old. I changed the chain tensioner piston which solved a rattle and cleaned out the idle control valve while I had the intake off to repaint....

I then spliced into the check engine light wire in the X20 connector and read the codes using the stomp method - 1215, 1223 and 1224. This surprised me because, having changed all my abs sensors and still getting the abs light on, no abs codes....

Anyway, I have visually inspected and cleaned the MAF, coolant temp sensor, cam speed sensor, crank sensor and checked all the fuses and vacuum hoses. This has exhausted my obvious limited abilities as a BMW mechanic.

Any suggestions, however remote, would be very welcome....

I had a 1215 on my car, it ended up being water in the AFM's electrical plug.  My e30 also had a BMW extension plug installed, I took that out.  Vacuum leaks can cause 1215 errors too.

The ABS system in these cars seems somewhat patched in.  I found a link somewhere around here about resetting the troublesome ABS light.  I ended up just pulling the panel out.  That blinking red light was annoying.  I'll get around to fixing it one of these days.
