Engine is Toasted, Advice?
« on: October 28, 2010, 06:31:00 PM »
So after driving on the freeway the other night my engine decides to take a shit on me.

After pulling off the head today I find this:

Since the block is messed up I have to find a new motor of choice.

I already have a m52 engine of out a 323 '97, but I am unsure if the cost for all the  parts needed to install it would cost the same as buying another m42.

What do you guys think? Swap? Replace? Anyone seeing the parts I need for the swap? Anyone know the actual parts i need for the swap? An complete motors for sale out there?

m42 head with m44 block

there are a couple approaches to this-

user "1991 E30 M42" (i think that's the handle) swapped a complete M44 rotating assembly into an M42 block, making everything plug-and-play.
advantage: freshly built motor. disadvantage: more expensive.

another user whose handle i forget put an M44 block under his existing head. search on those keywords and you should be able to find it. the M44 block only has a spot for one coolant temp sensor whereas the M42 has two, so he had to relocate one of them to the passenger-side coolant hose. other than that, he seemed to have an easy time of it- if you're competent enough to r&r a cyl head, you should be fine.
advantage: less expensive. disadvantage: used motor.

using the entire M44 engine would require the M44 wiring harness and ECU as well, and it's OBD2- you don't want to go this route; much more complication and hassle for no appreciable gain.

Or just track down an E30 M42 and drop that in.

I'm sure you could find one that someone pulled in favor of a 24v swap.

Can't you bore out that block and go with bigger piston's??

I wouldnt want to waste any money on this block.

As for the m44, i rather just stick with the m42 or 6cyc swap

Hey next time check your afr and ignition timing it seems that you have problems with those two things . You don't need to change your block you need to bay pistons with bigger diameter and just rebore the block .Good luck;)
