Hey guys.
If I had a jap M42 and wish to swap it into my M40 318i, would it be possible to use everything else from an e36 318i(m42 ZA spec)? The ecu, harnes, key and transponder (to keep ews) everything, the question i have is would my guage cluster work i.e. temp and tacho. I will be posting this same q in the other similar thread. Thank you

U can use the E30 tranny but the E36 M42 uses the 15mm pilot bearing in the crank so u will have to put a 12mm bearing in it with the E30 tranny. (pretty easy though)
not at all, as you see in ETK M42 has 12mm bearing up to 09/1990... so the difference is not e30 / e36

Thanks dude...nice info and movie.  I wanna throw an E36 M42 into my prefacelift project car, when I find one in good-enough shape.

The M42 swap has begun...

So, I'm pulling the M42 from the E36 and I question ... why do I need any of the wiring when I'm just using the engine (block/head) and will be using everything else (intake, altenator, coils/wires) from the e30.

I.e. Is there some thing unique on the E36 M42 block that requires me to change the wiring?

Harness connector is different. It simply won't plug into the chassis harness once you plug/wire everything up.

That's these guys were posting the differences between the two above. If you already have the harness from the E30, then just swap everything over before you put the motor in.

I understand that the connectors are different so if I take the E36 wiring along with the motor I would have splice/wire it up. But I don't understand why I need the E36 wiring.

Why can't I use the wiring which already exists in the E30?

Yes, E36 tranny. I used the standard E30 318i M40 drive shaft, had to modify the support mount in the middle and remove the big nut at the splines so i could get it short enough.
And i had to shorten the lower shift linkage like 1cm as well.

U can use the E30 tranny but the E36 M42 uses the 15mm pilot bearing in the crank so u will have to put a 12mm bearing in it with the E30 tranny. (pretty easy though)

Isnt the clutch the same? If its not just use the new clutch and E30 tranny ;)

the e30m42 is such a weird beast (as e30s go) that i'm not sure.

the clutch mfgr f'd up and sent an m20 pilot bearing, so we had to go to the dealer and get a (bigger) m42 one. as i understand it, this may be the same as the m5X-series bearing, so i might be ok to do a direct swap on the engine side...

only question is, will a transmission from an e36 (i don't have big-power visions, so either m5X/m4X would be fine) bolt up to my e30m42 driveshaft, making it an easy in/out?

i just moved and will be taking easily-available public transport to school, and the gf lives with me now, so long freeway trips are no longer a factor- i'll readily trade out an overdrive 5th gear for a close-ratio setup if everything is going to bolt right up...

If you use all that stuff from the E30 engine i think it will work?

I think the E36 M4x gearboxes are a little longer then the E30 gearbox, but it will work with some small mods to the support bearing mounting holes on the driveshaft and if you remove the big nut on the drive shaft so you can push the shaft together as much as possible.

I think the M50 gearbox will require a 328 E36 shaft for example. (or a M3 E30, 323 E36 i think and others)

I think so too but will pull the harness from the E36 just to be safe. Note that the pulling the harness is relatively simply EXCEPT at the fuse box. Not sure yet what I'm going to do there.
