DME Issues??
« on: August 08, 2010, 10:06:28 PM »
After finding and much reading of this web site I have decided that I need some help. At at the end of my short wire! Sorry about this being a bit long.

This started out as a fuel pump issue...or so I thought. I turned the engine off, went into the store and in less than 5 min later no start. I discovered that I had no fuel pump power. I have changed out the relay and that didn't work either.

So I jumpered out ther fuel pump (30 to 87) and it works fine. So then I started the process of checking the fuses, relays and wires. Didn't find any issues there. But I'm not pulling in the fuel pump relay. I jumpered the fuel pump relay (pin 85) to ground and the fuel pump comes on. That means that I'm not getting a ground through the DME to the fuel pump I think. Since this is an OBD 1, I put the code diagnostic checker on and it showes no faults. I jumpered the fuel pump out and the fuel pump is running but I not getting any  ignition. So my next step would be to get a new/ used DME but they are expensive

So I need more experiance at this than I have. Can the DME be bad and not show a code? Is there another way to check the DME? I'm checking the DME connection  to ensure that the groungs and the wire from the fuel pump to DME is good but I don't see a reference to where pin 1 on the plug is. Any thoughts or help is appreciated.

UPDATE: I checked the crank and cam sensors and they both check good.

questions. It would be so much easier and save time. Did you do the stomp test to check codes?
Have you checked you crank position sensor ?

+1 on that...a crank position sensor going wonky will cause just that same no start/no code situation.  The car won't start but you'll get a 1444 'all clear' code.

Test the resistance ion the sensor in ohms, you're looking for about 625 or so.  Cam sensor is in the same harness, test that too.  It should be about 1250 ohms or so.

The car in question is a 91 318is

I don't appear to have a light to do a stomp test. (No check engine or the light is durned out) What I do have is an OBD1 port and a code checker for that port. The code checker reports no faults. Will the stomp test show more than the code checker?

I did check the crank sensor and it ohmed out at 556 and the cam sensor at 1058. There is a local BMW shop and the guy there said that they are either working or completly dead. He thought they were OK. I have no idea what a too low reading is. In your opinions are these to low?
