Noise from driveline
« on: April 05, 2010, 08:37:44 PM »
I finished up replacing the guibo and CSB last night. When I got up this morning to goto work, there was an intermittent "whrrrring" noise coming from somewhere in the tranny/driveline tunnel.  Hard to describe, but it almost sounds like something rubbing then letting go.

I did the service according to this article:
http://www.esatclear.ie/~bpurcell/318ismaintenance.html#propshaft

I aligned the shaft as best I could in relation to how I took it apart. I think it's the alignment, but not entirely sure. I also replaced the bushing? that's in the end of the driveline, in the portion that attaches to the guibo.

The previous CSB had the collar snap, but the rubber was still intact, so at low speeds, there would be a hard rapping sound from the tunnel if I accelerated hard. Course, it's gone now, but I feel a good amount vibration when the hard rapping would normally occur. I'm thinking it wasn't aligned properly to begin with, and that's how the outer collar snapped?

What's the normal (bad) thing that happens if you put it back together misaligned?

Kind of a pain to do the work, because it's been so cold lately. I hate working on cars in the cold. Having to redo all this again isn't really a great thought. :(

Any thoughts welcome.

Is the guibo touching the bottom of the shift linkage or mechanism?  Are the tranny mounts or tranny alignment allowing the aformentioned parts to contact each other while rotating?  any contact from a loose or hanging heatshield?

Nah. I put everything back the way it was. I rotated the driveline a whole bunch, and i didn't feel any resistance or rubbing. When I was driving and the sound was present, I tried pressing in the clutch and putting the gearbox in neutral, but that didn't change the sound. I put the heat shield back on proper with all bolts in. I'll have to pop under there and have a look again tomorrow. And I didn't touch the gearbox mounts, so that should be fine.
