Finally, after 8 years of ownership, I am able to read the stomp codes. How that happened is a long and bizarre story, worthy of its own dedicated post, which will come later. For now though, here is what is unusual about the car now. First of all, it takes 6 stomps, not 5, to activate the test. I've done it several times both ways and its always 6, never 5. Second, it only flashes 1 code: 1-2-4-1. The master code list shows a 1231 and a 1251, but no 1241. In fact, there are no 124X codes at all. Now what?

I found this on the PelicanParts forums, but not much information anywhere else:

1241 - Mass Airflow Sensor - Codes 1241 and 2241 can be incorrectly generated on 1992 and later models. The actual fault is a improperly operating idle air valve, and the need for an updated EPROM. See BMW bulletins for more details.

The '91 DME isn't very much different than the later M42 models. I didn't think it was possible, but maybe your car's software has been updated?

Interesting. It says the 12 cylinder cars require 6 stomps to activate their 2nd DME, but those codes all start with a "2". So as I read this, it's possible I have a bad AFM or a bad ICV, except that it's a '91 model year car. Maybe I should re-install that pigtail mod and see if that has any effect.

Might be a good idea. I pulled mine and I see an occasional CEL on long downhill slopes. Never bothered to pull codes though - it always goes away as soon as I give it some gas for the next hill.

Seeming end to this story, although not the happy ending I was hoping for. First, the stomp code initiation sequence does appear to work properly. Apparently I was stomping the pedal too soon after turning on the ignition. I found if I turn the key to POS II, count 1 potato and then stomp the pedal 5 times it works as advertised. Next, I pulled the connector off the ICV and drove a few miles with the check engine light illuminated. Did the test and it did indeed identify the ICV as being suspect. Reconnected the ICV & ran the car a few minutes. Stomp code now shows 1444, or no codes present. Car still runs like poop (subject of another post) even after installing the pigtail. The good news is, stomp test is now functional after probably 20 years without it; the bad news is, it's usefulness is limited and in this case, is useless.
