Author Topic: MPH gauge, hmmm im traveling zero miles per hour (Read 2985 times)

what could cause mph gauge to stop working, everything else works on the dash board, example tep gauge ext,

there is this really small hose coming from the bottem of the upper half of the intake manifold, but i cant find where the hose connects to.
and im un sure of if the mph gauge is vacume or eletric.

the model is a 318is 92 BMW

It should be electric. Have you checked all of your fuses? As for the small hose from the upper intake, that is probably your fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose. You might want to investigate that and make sure its properly connected. Good luck.

The speedo is fully electric on all e36 & e30 models. Both have a sensor on the diff for the signal. Look at the back of the diff to the right of the fill plugs. That little connector or the sensor under it might be the source of your trouble... I'd test the connector first..it's cheap & easy to splice a new one in. I think BMW even offers a repair kit OTC.

Some BMWs had capacitors that fail & make the gauges fail. I hope it's not the cluster, they're expensive.

The e30 has a grounding nut that can make the gauges flaky too. I have the same trouble with my e30 & have yet to look at it.

soo i found out what it was haha im going to sound stupid but it was the conection to the air intake was unpluged. kinda doesnt make sense why that would effect that gauge, but i still havent been able to figure out what that tube is for that runs out underneath the uper manifold, its as thick as a bic pen. maybe a bit smaller, it might be zero gauge, ill take pictures and post if some one will help me figure out what this hose is for.

Hoses are measured inches or mm by internal diameter...but if it's the big one it probably runs to the idle control valve. That's a heck of an air leak there! I'm surprised it ran.

it was a screw on plug that went to the intake that messed up the mph

well that hose is probally like 5 or 4mm

its probally like 1 and a half feet long
