Con rod bolts
« on: November 04, 2009, 08:19:20 PM »
Guys, I need some help. I am in the early stages of a M42 rebuild and I need to know a couple of things.
First of all what socket do I use to remove the connecting rod bolts? they look like a 12 point version of the head bolts which are E12 torx, but nothing seems to fit properly on the con rod bolts.
Secondly are the crankshaft main cap bolts reusable? I know the con rod bolts and the head bolts are a one time use, but how about the mains?

Buy new from BMW dealer, they are not expensive.

I am not shure but I think 12 point socket. http://www.southbayriders.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=260418&d=1249329874

You know I think your right. I was playing around with my sockets here at work and it looks like a 10mm 12 point will work, its a bit of a sloppy fit, but I suppose with all the contact surface on the head of this bolt it should grip fine. Good, thought I was going to have to order a special tool there for a min.
