H&R Sports with KYB's for a daily?
« on: October 11, 2009, 03:51:30 PM »
I just picked up a set of H&R 50406's for $100 which have about a coil cut out of the front (pic below).  I have a brand new set of KYB 364021 gas shocks that I could use.  The car is a daily driven 318iS that frequently sees spirited driving but also ~80 miles/day in freeway commute.  My question is: Will I be oversprung and bottoming out with these shocks?  Does anybody have cut sports on their car?

You're all going to recommend Billy Sports aren't you

I don't think you'll be oversprung and bottoming out, but you'll be outside of the normal usable range. That's the benefit of the billy sport is that its a shorter shock to begin with, so its sitting closer to the middle of its usable range, whereas yours is towards the bottom of its. Only drawback to this is that the shocks will wear out faster, since they're having to work harder than their supposed to. That being said, I'd run these until they wear out and then save up for billy sports, its what I did w/ my ireland's on some cheap shocks until they wore out.

Mr Ranger - If a shock bottoms out something will have give either the strut base or the Top Mount/Hat. Compress the shock get measurement so you can judge for your self when it is installed. Those front springs to me looks like two coils are cut off you will be low.GL

I have KYBs on the rear of my car with H&R race springs, the KYBs have seen 2 track days and 2 seasons of AutoX on 3 different cars, on top of being driven daily.

You'll be fine.

I just installed one of those front springs and it definitely sits too low.  There's about a 1" gap between the tire and the fender liner.  I can't even pull out of my driveway.  I'm thinking of getting some regular 50406's (325i sport springs) and then saving for some Bilsteins.
Anybody have springs for sale??
