There is a seal on the shifter. It's a little one, about .75" in diameter. The other culprit which you should do since you're looking at it is the tailshaft seal. They are about $2 or $3 each. Tailshaft may be aproblem as the nut on it is sometimes hard to get off. You may want to do it when trans is back in car so you can use the engine to hold against it.
Hot tip on putting the trans back in. It will either pop right in OR will be a PITA. Put studs into 2-3 holes to use as guide pins.
