Please help! I cannot remove the power steering belt
« on: July 15, 2010, 10:36:39 AM »
I am trying to move the power steering pump so that I can install a new belt on it. I was able to do the alternator belt but for some reason I cannot seem to move the power steering unit.. I already loosened #13 in the pic below, not sure what else I need to loosen. Can anyone help?

I would also loosen up 7, 8 & 10.  #12 has a gear drive on it (if it's not stripped) and should be used to set/release tension once the mounting bolts are loosend up.  If all that fails, just remove all the bolts and the whole thing should drop free.

There are two small mounting bolts that tighten up on the bottom.  They're lined up and provide the pivot for that toothed adjuster nut.  I'd avoid using that adjuster unless all the bolts are a turn or two loose - I've stripped three or four of them over the years.

The two bolts in question are lined up under the pump, next to the engine.  One bolt threads into the p/s bracket, the other threads into the p/s pump.

and if you're reallly lazy and strong/patient, you can always unbolt the pulley itself. easy off, but harder on. belt tension might not be appropriate

Also replace 9 and 12 if you can. Mine were bad n this and alt.

12 should take a wrench and move it, rubber mallet the pump to break lose. If not, dont force it. loosen other bolts around it

FWIW, i change my belts with a screw driver. Literally 4 min job
