How do I reverse the tb heater plate mod?
« on: June 21, 2009, 05:10:43 PM »
Hey all. First post here. Have only had this car for a little while and trying to clean up the mess the previous owner left me. The car is a 91 318i with some of the normal issues these cars are plagued with. Most arent a big deal, but this one is annoying me.

Apparently, the PO tried to do this mod and did a poor job at it, and now I need to fix it.  I dont know enough about the M42 to just dive right in and fix it.

Heres what my issue is. When I go to start the car for the first time, or after any extended time (lets say 3-4 hours minimum) it starts and goes fine. No problems. But, if I have to start the car again right away (even if the car has only been on a few seconds) the car bogs down almost like it wants to stall (which it does if I dont press on the gas to keep it going).

As soon as the weather cools a bit, I would like to fix as many issues as possible. Steering rack, thermostat, valve cover gasket, and this.

So heres what we got:

The hose going from the boot the ICV and then a hose to the back of the intake. The hose going over the break fluid reservoir is super soft. You squeeze it and it crushes easily. There are 2 open hoses under the intake. From pictures supplied to me, the hose that is currently going to the icv is supposed to go to the one you can see in the above photo. However, there is another one behind ICV. You can see it in this photo just past the last intake port near the firewall:

There is also another port in the bottom of the boot that has nothing going to it.

I have looked at realoem.com and got this:

Now I have no idea where part#15 and 17 go. 11 goes to the back of the intake. Oh, and I tried to replace the boot, as you can see its cracked to hell and back, and as soon as I started the car, my rpms went through the roof. Would I be right in assuming the car's computer needs to be reset so it can relearn? (I use to mod mustangs, so I do have a basic knowledge. I just havent had any references to start with here)

Need any help that can be given.

And what was this mod suppose to do anyway?

Didn't we have some sort of hot start thread?  There is a connector in the main wiring harness over the firewall that should be disconnected.  Search for it:

You should definitely fix the vacuum hoses to your satisfaction, but I'd take the time to delete them all.

If you decide to keep them, check out this thread for more info:

#15 connects to a u-hose, it has coolant running through it.  There is a similar part next to it.
#17 connects to the bottom of the throttle body.

Sorry about that. Didnt know the issue was related to something else. I just assumed it was a vacuum issue and associated to the way the hoses were set up.

Just read that post. I seriously hope the fix is that easy. And thanks for that other link. That write up with pictures will really help.

Found that wire and it is plugged in. I hope this does the trick on that part.
