No apologies necessary but I have a '91 318is and the fuel filter is underneath, behind the driver's seat.

Got some hose and now I just need to do it.

I wonder if they put them elsewhere on American cars? Although it'd also depend what fuel tank you have - do you have the larger one? If so, that'd be why. e.g. someone fits the larger tank, and so relocates the fuel filter etc.
Mildly stripped and dropped 4 door with an M42 fitted!
