No heat, but engine is hot?
« on: March 11, 2009, 10:52:13 PM »
I need some advice.  I had to replace the coolant return junction piece under the intake manifold today, unplanned, the nipple on the top which connected to the throttle body heater plate broke.  While I was in there I got rid of the extra hoses under there. I added the bypass from the block to my new coolant junction.  Buttoned it all up and it starts and runs great.  But now I have no heat.  So my engine temperature will climb and keep climbing(overheat if I let it), but I get no heat.  By the way I checked all my connections and am sure it is hooked up right.

I tried bleeding the coolant system, but no luck.
Is this caused by a bad thermostat?

thermostat in backwards? if it was bad, it would just stay open, it would be pretty much impossible to get stuck closed.

other possibility is you didn't bleed your cooling system and your not actually pumping coolant.

or you hooked it up all wrong

+1

except park on a slight hill, with the front of the car on the higher elevation, that should help. ;)

I never took the car off jack stands, I just idled it to hot in my garage.  Would that make a difference?  I will try and bleed the system again tonight after work.

Make sure the heater is on full blast while you bleed.

Thanks for the advice everyone.  It was just me improperly bleeding the system.  I got everything right.  Even pulled the pan and looked for bolts, luckily no bolts and no loose ones either.  There was a bit of what appeared to be plastic bits in there however.  I am assuming the chain guides are eating away.  Got a new tensioner I will install come Saturday.  Hope it helps, but I guess the chain replacement is inevitable.

Inevitable as in paramount that you do it as soon as possible. Oil pumps do not like chunks of plastic, and when your oil pump isn't happy, shit explodes. I would err on the side of caution and just do it right. Glad you got the cooling system squared away, but it seems you may have bigger fish to fry.
