head question..
« on: February 09, 2009, 08:39:07 PM »
my never ending head replacement on a 91 m42
never get the time I need, only got to work on it for 45 minutes today
so today the job took a giant step forward, few hours away from starting

but I still dont have the top timing chain cover on (or valve cover)
I have spun the engine several times by hand ( 22mm on ratchet) and heard or felt no noises from the valve area
(I used alignment tools for the cam and the pin for the crank, plus the origninal tear down marks)
however the timing chain tensioner ( new) and chain seem to "kick" or "slap" about 1 time every full revolution. the timing marks do not change with relationship to the cams and crank even after about 20 hand spins
Im assuming it needs oil pressure to hold it all in place, the tensioner is extended

is this normal, and should I keep buttoning things up ???

sorry if this is a "no issue" I just dont want to do anyting wrong

you are probably good to go.
why not take a pic of the cam alignment and the cam gear markings etc? Let everyone look at it just for peace of mind.

I bet you are golden but I know the feeling of not wanting it to go "boom".

I think you have no oil or tension holding it all together, so hence the click.

Woot, gotta hate spammers!

Isamemon, thats fine mate! Mine did the same all of 4 weeks ago! It does slap (we were like, wtf is that noise?! Until I noticed what it was!) until, as you thought, there's oil pressure in there. Don't worry!
Mildly stripped and dropped 4 door with an M42 fitted!
