brake rattle
« on: June 18, 2006, 09:25:45 AM »
The tensioner spring is missing from one of brake pads and the rattle is driving me crazy. Does anyone know if I can just replace this spring or if I have to get a whole new pad?

If I can replace just the spring . . . do you know where the best place to get it is? I tried to order some anti rattle clips from BavAuto but the sent me the wrong thing.

If you are talking about the clips for the rear brakes, just go to the dealer.  It's a cheap part.

If it's the spring thing that goes on the top of the pad, I don't know...  I would guess you could pull them out of some pads from a junkyard.  Funny thing is I just replaced my pads and all the tensioner springs look fine, yet I am getting that same sorta noise (rattle) from my right side pads.  It's driving me crazy, but there's other rattles that are slightly more annoying at the present moment.

Its the spring thing for the front. Do new pads come with these springs?

Yeah, all new pads will come with new springs.  No worries.  If your pads need replacing, it might be a good excuse to do this, but I always try to replace rotors when I do pads making it an expensive proposition if you don't really need them.

But, you can get some Mintex Red Box or some cheapie alternative for not much money.

I just replaced my brake calipers, pads, rotors and brake lines.

I also painted the rotor hats and inner vents with high-temp engine paint so they won't rust too quickly.  Seemed to work on a past car I had.  I think I got the last set of ATE PowerDiscs around as well.  They seem to be unobtinium.

Nice. I've been wanting to do this too (when I have money) . . . what is your before and after comparison of brake performance? Are you using performance pads or the standard kind?

I've got Hawk HPS pads.  That's a "high performance street" pad.  A little noisy, but good performance for a pad you can run at the track all day and drive daily without problems.

The brakes need to be bled out again.  My pedal pressure is definately not as firm as it should be with these lines.

I'm going to build a pressure bleeder as someone made in a write up in the DIY section out of an ACE hardware sprayer bottle.  That's the best way to bleed brakes IMHO.

Yeah, I used my dad's brake bleeding system that he got from Griotts I think. Its the only way to go, especially for older cars where pumping the brake peddle can easily (and most likely) damage the master cylinder.

Do you have the vaccuum bleeder or the pressure bleeder.

A friend of mine had the big vaccuum bleeder...  You just hook up the clear tubing, open the valve and pump up the lever and then open the valve...  good flush of fluid comes through!  And, it's a huge container, great one-person bleeding system.  Too bad he still lives in Seattle.

He also sells one that you hook up to an air compressor and it uses a venturi effect to pull the fluid through.  I thought about this one as well.

He's got a pressuure bleeder. Just uses a handpump, and works quite well. You're welcome to use it the next time you are in Ohio ;)

I used that one at school. I don't like it. Air passes threw the threads and you're always gonna see bubbles in the tube. The best way is the pressure bleeder or doing it with a friend pumping the brakes. My 2 cents.
