Throttle seems stuck on my 318is on 3rd gear
« on: November 11, 2008, 08:04:12 AM »
When running at 3rd gear, my throttle seems stuck cuz even if I let go the car still accelerates, and if I depress the clutch it revs a lot, but the throttle pedal I am pretty sure is already fully release and does not feel stuck.  Then as I am about to pull over (with car in neutral and engine still revving) it suddenly goes back to idle properly.

Has anyone of you experience this problem....what is the solution???

I checked linkage, cables...all seems fine, and my car has no cruise control installed so I cannot blame the cruise control.....

Please Help!!!!

I had this problem... ended up being the throttle cable at the throttle body.  It would intermittently pull out of it's holder on the throttle body and get stuck which would cause it to keep revving.

I know you said you checked the cables... but go out and pull on it and see if the little metal piece inside the plastic grommet pulls out and gets stuck in the pulled position.  My problem was exactly as you described... only thing I can think of.

Yup, I've seen ^^that happen as well.  Scary stuff when the throttle sticks open!

I know of nothing electronically that would only occur in third gear and that would not also occur in other gears, acceleration-wise.  So it has to be a linkage issue.

Hi guys,

I have not solved the problem yet....it still occurs, and I am sure the cable does not get stuck.  But if I press the ASC switch (deactivate the traction control) then I dont have the problem of the throttle stuck open at all on any gear.  But if the ASC is in normal position (no orange triagle light on dash) the the stuck throttle happens after reaching 50KM/H or more, if I put gear in neutral, and still coasting at more than 50km/h then the engine revs itself to 4.5-5k rpms, and when I slow down to about 15km/h the engine goes back to idle normal....Its really hard to solve......

Out of curiosity, have you tried a different TPS sensor. Just trying to think of other things that are related to the throttle and aren't the cable.
