Paint Gurus - Alpinweiss II single or dual stage?
« on: August 16, 2008, 04:05:36 PM »
Hi Everyone,

Does anyone know if Alpinweiss II (paint code 218) is single- or dual-stage (clearcoated)? I found an archived post on DTMpower that said it was single stage, but I bought the touch up paint from the dealer and it includes clear coat. My concern is that BMW may have switched to dual stage after my car's 1990 build date; I was under the impression that non-metallic paints of my car's vintage were always single-stage. Anyone have any insight on this?

Some background if you're interested:

Just picked up my new-to-me 91 318is last week, and I'm about to tackle some paint restoration. The body is great, haven't found any rust, but there is a lot of bonded junk in the paint.

I plan on a complete clay bar treatment, followed by Meguiars #80 (speed glaze), polish and wax. Then I'd like to fix a few rock chips on the hood and mirrors with touch-up paint. Which brings me to the questions above: use two-stage touch-up paint, as provided by the dealer, or go with a color-only paint.

Thanks for the help!!

The e30 has a single coat.  They do that because the e36 M3 had a dual coat.  Found that out from my moms car when we bought the touch up paint.
