How do you guys research and find open track days where you can go? I live eastern NC/VA and would love to find somewhere I can "let her loose," but I don't know of anywhere or how to find out. anyone know of any places near or know of some resources I can use to find some?

I live in Northern VA an I go to Summit Point in West VA quite a bit. It's a little over an hour's drive from the DC area. If you're in NC, VIR in Danville VA or CMP (Carolina Motorsports Park) in SC is probably closer for you. As for signing up, I usually go with NASA. SCCA goes there too, CarGuys, and I would gues BMWCCA probably visits those places as well.

What are you looking to do when you say "let loose?" There are tracks close to you in VA,PA,GA,FL,AL,TN etc. All depends on your formal racing experience or if you're want to LEARN how to DRIVE the RIGHT WAY

Personally, I figured out which type of racing and then a club or association to race with and followed that way.

Simplest way is with BMWCCA and a driving school.
They require the least amount of equipment and mods (A.K.A. money) to get onto a track and are more interested in helping you and your car get around it safely.

Go to a local chapter get together and ask them, they will be glad to help you get going.
Once you get in with them, you will likely get a decent amount of track time.

Best way is to join a local or regional chapter of some of the auto clubs. They all host open "track days", however the focus is on driver education and learning. You'd be amazed how much potential you never hit (of your skills and your car's ability) on the street.

Spin your car once or twice and it scares you enough to pay close attention and work on the line and skills before trying to simply "go fast"... there's a lot of moving pieces to high performance driving and while there are some people with god given inherant talent, it's generally not something that happens overnight.

VIR and Summit Point are two tracks within a few hours of you that are great places for such events. I REALLY want to visit VIR this fall... There is some sort of a open testing track event there in October or November my dad has gone to a few times. I hope I can make it this year.

Trackdays can be expensive. I just paid $375 for a two day course at Barber.
As e9nine would probably tell you, Auto-x is a good way to break into the sport without breaking your wallet!
