If I missed a thread regarding this subject I apologize.  I am in the process in getting a new steering wheel to replace the OEM with aribag.  the wrapping on the old steering wheel is floating a good reason to go with a sport one.  Does anyone have a brake down on how to remove stock wheel?  with photos would be nice.

No pics as yet, I'll look and see what I have.

Disconnect the battery. Let the car sit for 10 minutes or so - there is a capacitor or something in the airbag system that could deploy the airbag if you immediately try to remove it.

Under the column is a little plastic 'door.' Open this, fish out the orange connector, and unplug it. This is the airbag connector.

Two torx bits on the back of the wheel hold the airbag on; can't for the life of me remember what size. They are captive screws, just loosen them then pull the airbag loose. There is another connector that plugs into the airbag itself, take that off once the airbag is loose.

Remember, an airbag is an explosive device - take a little care with it. It shouldn't just go off, but you never know!

Now you can see the center nut - 22mm. You'll probably need a breaker bar unless you have manly forearms. I prefer to insert the key, unlock the wheel, and just hold on to the wheel as I stand outside the car and loosen the nut. I don't like the idea of that much torque on the locking pawl. To each his own, some people like to lock the wheel and just crank.

Anyway, remove that nut, then unlock the steering wheel with the key. Make sure your turn signal switch is in the center/neutral position. Lift the wheel off.

Installation is the reverse of removal; make sure that when you put the wheel back on your turn signal switch is in the center position, otherwise you'll break the little plastic lug that cancels the turn signals, and you'll have to cancel them yourself.

BMW calls for replacing that 22mm nut each time you remove it, but blue Loctite should work fine.

Don't reconnect the battery until the airbag is fully connected, including the connector under the column - the SRS light will illuminate and won't go off, and even the dealers can no longer reset that.

The two captive screws on the back, holding the airbig piece on are Torx T30.

Thanks guys.  Now If only I can make up my mind which sport wheel I want to replace the old one with.

My personal favorite is the MTech II wheel, and I just won one on eBay UK for $137.  Problem is, it's gonna take $111 to ship it.  Still...I usually see them for $350 on US eBay, so I'm enthused about saving a few bucks and getting what I want.

For that price it was new? I just bought a good used one from German ebay for 60€. If you would like to buy these parts from Europe, the German Ebay is usually much cheaper than UK one.

What can I say.  We americans typically don't hang out on European eBay's, I don't believe.  Maybe I'll have to start.

Do these steering wheels have a clock counting mechanism?

Many airbag equiped vehicles have a mechanism to determine how turned the steering wheel is, I believe so they do not deploy if your arms are turned in front of you.  I know a 92 Audi has this mechanism, I would be surprised if a 91 bmw does not.

Part # 2 slip ring ~150$ I would imagine is this device.  If so take care to remove it and mark straight up.   Then install with the wheels straight and your orientation mark in the same posistion, as this mechanism if inappropriately oriented could result in injury.

You can't.  The SRS computer fails to see an airbag and illuminates the lamp.  Only was I've seen is to de-solder the LED from the status panel.

BT - if you're replacing an airbag with a non-airbag wheel, be sure to bend or replace the controls stalks, as they are different as well.

I was actually trying to take off my wheel while working on my no crank issue thinking it was my ignition switch until i realized that one of the torx bolts were rounded off. Any suggestions on how i could take off the wheel?
