1991 318is M42 Puking Coolant from back Please Help!
« on: May 31, 2008, 06:40:15 PM »
Hello all. This is my first post on m42club.com, and I wish it was a bit happier. Last fall, when I put my 91 318is away in my shop for the winter, I noticed it was leaking a bit of something. No big deal, I figured I would deal with it when I pulled it back out for the summer. So I pull it out, and as I'm getting ready to drive it home, it starts purging massive amounts of coolant from somewhere under the back of the intake. My first concern was the head or profile gaskets, but I find it hard to believe a headgasket leak would cause this kind of coolant loss. Also - since this was on the back of the head, I doubt it's the profile gasket. I suspect it to be one of the heater core hoses, but I'm unsure, and so I turn to the M42 experts here. Is this a common problem? Do I have to remove the intake manifold? If so, can someone provide me with relevant manual pages for removing the intake manifold? Now for Some background : I've never overheated the car, although it does run hot. It has about 155,000 on it, and the radiator was replaced before I purchased it. If anyone needs any pictures or anything, please let me know.

if you pm me your email, I have  pictures when I did my rebuild. Also check the repair manual, might be a sticky here. I know it is on the e30 bimmerfest forum.

Under the intake are a bunch of hoses, and like you said could be the heater core hoses.

could be any of the mass of hoses under the intake.
My guess off hand is the plastic water pipe that 3 hoses go into.

Hey, thanks for the prompt replies you guys. I appreciate it. I'm going to take a look at that repair manual, and start taking the intake manifold off. The car is off the road anyway, since the driveshaft center bearing needs to be replaced, I need to install the big diff limited slip I bought, the ebrake needs to be adjusted.. etc. I think I might even pick up a set of the TMS aluminum subframe bushings, since I'm not fond of the delrin ones that I installed previously. I also bought all the stuff I need to completely rebuild the lower control arms and swap to polymer in the front. So, I have my work cut out for me.
