Got some issues looking for help YAH TRICK YAH!!!
« on: March 08, 2008, 04:21:37 PM »
Alrighty where do I start....

Sometimes when I start my car in the morning the starter makes a grinding noise and once I try it one more time the engine turns over fine and the problem doesn't come back for the whole day unless the car sits for a while. So could be the starter right??

Next issue is on rainy days the clutch pedal seems soft and spongy. So 1- Could be the clutch slave cylinder or 2- bleed the system and re fill it maybe some air in the lines. So maybe since its raining out and all the moist does some David Blaine magic and does work:confused:

So some help will be appreciated thanks.

For the starter issue, is the sound more of a screech than a grind?

Could be two things,
1 - If it is a grind noise - the starter pinion gear may be sticking with the flywheel ring gear, therefore it is not retracting quick enough.
2 - If it is a screech noise - this was happening to me - check out your alternator belt tension and the belt itself. I changed the belt on my car and didn't tighten it enough. Everytime I would start the car for the first time in the morning it would screech when the engine fired. Just tightened the belt a couple of turns and it never came back.

With your clutch pedal issue - check for leaks from the hydraulic circuit.
change your brake fluid and bleed your brakes and clutch. See if that helps. It could just be that the clutch slave cylinder has failed. They usually last 10 years.

Hope this helps, Nick

Its more of a grind noise. I already checked the alternator belt and all it was pretty lose since I had taken it off a while back to do my oil filter housing gasket  but that problem got fixed. But its only sometimes while im turning the car over that it grind and it sounds as if the starter itself is not catching on to turn the motor over. Maybe no enough spark to give enough energy to the starter or something similiar to that or just the starter itself. As for bleeding the system I will be doing that soon or might just change the clutch slave cylinder just to replace it and have it new.

Oh ok, it could be just a faulty starter, see if you can obtain a used starter and see if the noise goes away.

This may also seem unlikely in your case, however I remember working on a Peugeot 306 a while back and it had a grinding noise during start-up, found out it had a loose flywheel.
