steering rack seals or gaskets
« on: March 08, 2008, 12:07:09 PM »
Is there a seal or gasket on the output shaft of the steering rack?  The area I am referring to would be where the steering column shaft from the firewall is secured to the top of the rack.  There is a black outer rubber grommet - is this a seal or gasket, if not, is there a seal or gasket located under that grommet?

Yes there is, the area you're refering to is the valve housing. It contains very high pressure oil ready to be directed to either side of the piston inside the rack. Depending on how you load it with torque.

Based on that info, can the valve housing seal or gasket be replaced and if so, how hard/easily can this be done?  Is it just a matter of disconnecting the steering shaft and pulling the seal, or does the entire rack need to be dropped to do this (if the seal/gasket CAN be replaced)?

I have only rebuildt the old style rack (With steel cylinder and alluminum valve housing). Where the new style is a one piece alluminum cast unit.

If you have the old style sure you can.

If you have the new style, imnot sure but i think you should be able to do it.
