Hello all,

Just curious if a block heater exists for the M42.  Preferably an OEM part, but if an aftermarket one exists, that would be fine too.

I would suggest one of the aftermarket adhesive pad ones, magnet type will not work with our aluminum oil pans

do you feel one is needed for your car?

I have used them here on diesels on occasion, if its about -15F or lower there is notable improvement in ease of starting.  But on gasoline vehicles I have never thought it necessary.

I use a mercedes benz battery for diesel automobiles, you will notice that in the trunk there are two holes for the battery mount, which allows the usage of a much larger battery with more cranking amps.  These batteries are great, I have used many brands in benz diesels and it really tells the story, the best three I have found Benz ties with Bosch, and Deka.  The worst were interstate batteries and exide batteries which being as I have experienced over 45 benz diesels this is beginning to be scientific.

I own 2 MB diesels.  Yes, those group 49 batteries are great!

I dont feel that it is necessary, the car starts fine in cold weather... but between a slight lifter tick at very cold startup, a slight tc rattle at cold startup (despite new tensioner), and the fact that it is awful nice to have heat sooner, get the car into an ECU mode where it is more efficient, etc., I think the heater may be a worthy investment.

Whats the risk??? $50 and some coolant?  Its worth a shot.  Ive been reading of the benefits fuel economy related that have been noted by folks using an EBH even in temperate climates.

Until you have to carry one, I've settled on taking my foot long 3/8" extension sticking it through both handles and hauling it around that way.

I drove from traverse city MI, to grand rapids on a single charge w/ a dead alternator, then swapped to another on the roadside and finished it up to chicago.  That's about 2.5 hours of solid running off the battery, including lights and even radio.

Heck if you have somewhere to plug it in, can't hurt.  Sometimes I take one of those timers for lamps and a few extensions and wire up several benz's in the drive when its really cold.  Haven't had to in the last few years, very mild temps here (chicago) and we've been using our pick of the crop as it were of the many cars we've owned, these ones start like a dream, though one is in for a transmission.
