Replacement Gas tank?
« on: October 04, 2007, 06:52:32 PM »
Im currently looking at buyin another 91 318is. The owner states
" It needs a new fuel tank, according to my mechanic. I noticed a gas smell recently when I filled up the tank. He said that the neck of the tank is rusting, and leaks. I can fill up with about 8-10 gallons of fuel (14 is the max), and it's fine, no smell, no leaks. New fuel tank costs $349 at Bavarian Autosport (bavauto.com)"
How difficult is this to do? Or about how much would it cost at a garage if its too difficult to do. Thanks!

dont know much about cost at a shop but i would say its not difficult if you have the right tools.

the rear subframe has to come out (rear diff, rear trailing arms, driveshaft etc.). then its a clear shot to the tank.

Try BMA first, BMAparts.com - probably cheaper.

And the exhaust also has to come out. Not technically challenging, but not much fun. Make sure you are about on empty when you do this - fuel is heavy!
