independant fog lights (once again!)
« on: August 14, 2007, 10:03:41 PM »
so i know this has been posted before; but i have done the perscribed steps and it hasn't worked. i'm hoping someone else has had the same experience...
so i followed this thread:
http://m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2279&highlight=independant+fogs

ok, so i linked 85 & 30 on K8 on my 1991 318is (same car) and it doesn't work for me...
what i want: my fogs to be on with parking lights (i.e. low beams not 'on')
what i get from following that thread: low beams on at all headlight knob positions (day lights, first stop and low beam)

so what's the deal?
one thought i had was that i also did the jump between the low beam relay and the high beam relay that allows both low and high beams to be on at the same time. could that be affecting what i'm trying to do?
any help is welcome...

On euro models you can turn on your foglights when you pull light switch to the first position. Then you have your parking lights on with the fogs (if foglight switch is pressed on). I suppose with euro light switch & euromodel relay it works. I have an extra euro model light switch available.
There were everal types of light switch available, for example in Sweden there was a function which turned on lights when you started your car. Thats because you must use headlight also during the day time in several countries, like Sweden, Finland etc..  For some reason cars imported to Finland didn't have the same kind of function like those imported to Sweden.

it's always interesting to see other differences in e30's accross the pond.
but it seems like some people can get their North American e30's to do this with a simple relay jump!

lol thanks for following my thread ;)

I'm assuming that all of your wiring, the lights, and the switch are all american model stuff. If you did the same things as in this thread, it should work. My car, however, is a very early build date and may have different wiring. There is a different hack that m20 owners use, and using this mod caused the fogs to stay on all the time. It can be found here.

Another common mistake is forgetting to bend down pin 85. If this pin isn't bent, then it won't work. The relay doesn't have to seat in the fuse box, it just has to make contact on the 3 unbent prongs. If this doesn't work, let me know.
