Power locks dont work? Do all 318is's have them?
« on: August 07, 2007, 01:43:48 PM »
So i bought this nice 318is last month, but the locks arent automated. I have to physically lock the passanger, and use the key to lock the driver door. The turnk stays open, i have to manually lock it as well. Did some of these cars come with manual locks? How can i convert it or fix the power lock problem. I need to do this so i can do the remote lock mod.

I also bought a 318is last month, and I cannot turn ANY lock with the keys.  Neither doors, nor the trunk cylinders will rotate at all.  I've soaked them with WD-40 to no avail, and I've been searching for all the tech articles I can find on the subject (Pelican Parts et al.)  For now, I just leave nothing valuable in the car, but I would like to lock it all up someday.  Presumeably, I can replace or repair the necessary parts.  I just need to figure out what exactly the problem is first.

P. kennedy-Sounds like someone got a new ignition key and didn't change the locks on the doors and trunk. Otherwise, I have no idea what what the problem would be.

bmuser-My car also does not have central locking. There are 2 easy ways to check. Look behind the kick panel next to the driver's left foot. The control module is behind the speaker. The easiest way is to look at the gas cap filler door. If there is a hole coming through the body so that a pin can slide through and lock the door, you have central locking. As far as conversions go, you *might* be able to install factory parts out of a donor car. I'm currently in search of parts, and I'm probly going to try it without the filler door lock. Good luck!

Good point Gearhead, that hadn't occurred to me.  Though, the 2 keys I receieved with the car look to be VERY old and beat up with lots of wear & tear (original, I'm guessing.)

The central locking appears to be working; if I push down manually on a door button, everything locks up fine & unlocks too.

Interestingly, the 2 keys I have are not identical and I presume one was meant to be a valet key, but one of my keys does not work in anything!  Doors, trunk or ignition.  Swell.

So what are my options?  Lock cylinder replacement?  Repair?  Any help greatly appreciated in case I have to move to a high crime area.

They surely did!
Because of high car taxes in some european countries, like Denmark, Greece, Finland etc. most "luxury" equipements were "deleted". For example here in Finland most IS models does not have the following items:

-power locks
-power windows
-AC
-sun roof
-power steering
-sport seats

All lock's are manual, so you must use keys with trunk lid and also fuel cap, fuel filler door does not have any locks etc. etc. Compared to US models these cars are much lighter, real Club Sport models....

Here's one sad example:

You might try going to a dealer or a local shop and checking to see how difficult it would be to change the locks. I have little experience with changing or resetting locks so I can't help much, but I'm pretty sure it can be done.

damn , that sux. And im sure doing a conversion is going to be tough and annoying. Trying to source the parts and all. If anyone's done it, get back to me or to this thread and tell us unfortunate manual lock souls about it.

Parts aren't the problem-just go to a junkyard. Installation is probably a PITA involving new lock cylinders and actuators and a lot of wourk behind the bracing in the doors and trunk.
