What do you make of these SMOG test results?
« on: July 16, 2007, 09:52:14 PM »
I went in for the test today.  I had the MAF on there as well as my Conforti chip and LC-1 WBO2.  Damn close to passing, kinda.  I had tweaked the LC-1 a little bit lean for economy too.

15MPH Test - FAILED (Gross Polluter to boot!)
% CO2 - 14.7
% O2 - 0.5

Hydrocarbons (PPM)
Allowable - 124
Measured - 12

CO %
Allowable - 0.78
Measured - 0.01

NOx (PPM)
Allowable - 815
Measured - 2317

25MPH Test - PASSED
% CO2 - 15.0
% O2 - 0.1

Hydrocarbons (PPM)
Allowable - 98
Measured - 4

CO %
Allowable - 0.66
Measured - 0.00

NOx (PPM)
Allowable - 754
Measured - 714

Since this I have put the stock AFM back in, and have set the LC-1 back to its original (too rich IMO) set points.  I get a free retest, so hopefully this will go OK.  I do not want to buy a new cat if I do not have to.  Running a little lean usually does this on the M42 right?  High compression motors are a PITA to smog, my last one sure was.  Sigh, pain in the rear.....

your nox shouldnt be that high at all.  if you have a good working cat and your egr system is functioning properly everything thould be good. try richening your mixture out a little bit and you should be fine.

Yeah I can tell by the econometer on the way to work this morning that it is running richer.  I put the WBO2 controller back to its original (too rich IMO) setting and the AFM back in.  Retesting today, 5PM sharp!

Hokay, so I passed after setting the WBO2 back to its original settings (too rich IMO) and swapping the AFM back on.  Talk about a narrow pass at 15mph!  I think I will replace the cat just for the environment's sake!

15MPH Test - PASSED, BARELY
Hydrocarbons (PPM)
Allowable - 124
Measured - 124

CO %
Allowable - 0.78
Measured - 0.76

NOx (PPM)
Allowable - 815
Measured - 9 - Wow, what a difference 14.2:1AFR makes versus 15.2:1AFR!

25MPH Test - PASSED, with a decent margin compared to the above!

I passed smog today with a lc-1 feeding the ecu narrowband input, with a error about the heater circuit open (i left old heater wires not connected, I should solve that with a 18W-14V brake bulb...;)).

Now I'm happy, after all wiring and ground problems the LC-1 is making a great work...:D

yupp makes sense to me.. when the mixture is a little rich it cools down the combustion chamber and nox decreases.. since you passed you can go ahead and go back lean and save some $$$ on gas
