Thinking about turbo- charging a BMW 318is.
I heard that there is no knock sensor on early M42's.
What engine would you chose between an E30 inline four and an E36 inline four and why?
Is there a big difference between the two of them?
Will the more recent engine fit bolt- on in the earlier chassis?

Advices and tricks is what's needed.

the 92 and 93 m42's have knock sensors, but if you build the kit properly and tune it well it shouldn't be a huge problem to not have them.

i think all the e36 m42 Euro has knock sensor, and they have different cams, more HP and more torque. compansatione for higher weight of the e36 chassy. some has plastic oil filter casing. the oil pan is also different. The intake manifoild is made for more torque to( plenum, to long tubes and then splis in 4). i think the e30 manifoild is better for turbo application. some argue that the angle is diffrent, will touch the under side of bonnet.?

I hawe the e30 engine, but prefere the e36 handling. going for the e36 i think.
Go for the Garret GT BB series, i bougt the GT2860RS aming at 280hp 1 bar fast spoolup, but the GT2871R is a good choice to. more HP

More or less.
Are you doing everything yourself or is someone doing it for you?
I hesitate between a fast spool- up or a slow spool- up.

I am doing all most everything my self. going for the m47 crank and Je 86mm pistons makes 2 liter. low comp 1-8. Cometic MLS Gasget 1,5mm. VEMS ore Link ECU. Alla asubimmer's turbo manifoild, som modds not sure about external ore internal wastegate, have Tial 38. Bosch 42# ford racing injectors, m50 coil on plugg. aeromotive thunami fuel pump and regulator.

Hejsan Arne,

looks like a nice project you have over there. I am planning to build a turbo as well. Currently i am looking for a E30 318IS engine, but they seems to be hard to find, at least here in Finland. I was offered yesterday a complete E36 318IS engine with wiring harness and Motronic box for 500€, don't know if this is a good deal or not. I am currently waiting for a car i bought from Germany. Decent examples are hard to find in my country, because they used to be quite expensive when new, so they are usually very poorly equipped; no sunroof, A/C, sportseats or M Tech II body kit etc. Most of them are usually also spoiled by teenagers who have installed massive bodykits/spoilers.

So i am looking for an extra engine to be build as turbo. My plans are build a bored & storked engine. I have loacted a M47 crank and most likely i am going to use W�ssner turbo pistons like i have with my Porsche 951 3.0 liter turbo. Btw, what is the maxium bore which can be used on M42 engines? My Porsche 951 has a 3.0 litre 4-banger engine with 104mm bore.

I have a lot of Porsche 951 turbo left overparts parts laying around, so most likely i am going to use them as much as possible. For engine management i will use original Motronic with custom burnt chip. Most likely there will be also either SMT6 or AFM Link piggback boxes added so i can get rid of that flapper airflow meter. For ping/detonation i am going go use Porsches KLR box, which works together with Motronic. Also Porsche IC & KKK 27/6 turbo will be used. With these mods i am expecting to have about 220-250hp with 1bar boost.

You'll have more hp with 1 bar of boost...

(if you was talking of flywheel hp). You'll have something near 225 rwhp.

2,04 liter 125 CDI 1 bar boost IC= 280HK flywheel. Redline 6800RPM Ve 95%
32 Lb/min 6800RPM
