When did BMW switch from R12 to R134?

Gang,

My 91 318i AC compressor has gone south. Going through the receipts from the PO, I discovered that the AC compressor had seized up and that the local BMW dealer near the PO (Rusnak in 1000 Oaks) wanted nearly 2K to fix it. Needless to say, the PO declined. The car has only 125K on it. Last year I bought a 91 318i parts car for $450, the AC worked on that car and I have pulled the compressor and its in my garage at the moment.

I'm looking for E30 owners feedback on converting from R12 to R134. What all is involved and how much wlll it cost me?

The PO of my 89 325i did the R134 conversion, it seems to work well but not as cold as R12.

R134 conversions are expensive and less efficient than R12. Simply put your AC won't be as cold with the same size condenser. Read through the links and pick your poison.

you just removed the compressor letting all the R-12 into the atmosphere....nice.
