I honestly did not expect that my air conditiong would work, but when I fired it up today I was plesantly surprised that it was putting out cold air!  

Honestly, that made my day, because I had already resigned myself to spending some $$ to get it in working order.  I know a lot of people don't care about the A/C, but I like all of my comfort features in working order.  Not to mention I've got two small kids and I'm moving to Florida in a couple of months.

So, just a shout out to see who's A/C is still ticking after 16 years.

Yes and no. On days where its not too hot and during the night, my A/C blows real cold. On really hot days, my A/C sucks nuts.

It's on it's second compressor. I say works with some reservation as I have never felt the A/C was adequate. I do live in Central Texas which is similar to Florida temp wise. I have a diamonzschwarz w/black interior. Never again. I only have this color/trim combo because I bnought the car on an impulse. I saw it and liked it - my first E30! If it just had the A/C of that 97 Camry. My last four passenger family sedan.

I have R134. From what I hear it's not as good performance wise as R12 but the good part is you can buy a can at the parts store and put it in yourself.

Do a search on Ebay for "freeze12" or "fr12". It is an R134 blend that allows you to just remove the r12 and replace it with this.

Just be sure to leave the labels and caps (note, one cap will not fit due to the way the lines work on the e30) so that no one hooks this to an R12 system to bleed it, the shop will NOT be happy.  The good, it works and is cheap. The bad, you are pretty much stuck to servicing it yourself (VERY simplke and for about $50 you get the entire kit with guage, which is all you need).

But lets face the facts, it cost me around $50 for the kit, and will cost only a few bucks to recharge if it needs it, and an R12 servicing can top $200 these days.


I bought a kit with guage (about $30-$50), and since my system was basically empty, I just bled what was left (which was nothing). I hooked up th guage and freeze12, and as it started to pressurize, I bled a bit out the high pressure side to push out anything I did not want in there a second time.

Works great, I have had it in for over a year and it blows at least as cold as r12 does. The company claims it is colder than r12, and far colder than r134, even though pressures are the same as r12.

Mine worked AWESOME... until I had to cut the AC belt to get the alternator belt on back in the December or so.  I have yet to put the AC belt and power steering belts back on.  I hope the AC still works good.  

I've read in many places that the key to keeping your AC system working well is to run it for a few minutes every few weeks - even in the winter.  I haven't been able to do that in a while.

mine worked great until i had to do a motor swap due to a thrown rod. discharged it, never botherd to recharge it, i'll probably pull it all out when i put in my new motor.
