Dry sump???
« on: March 11, 2007, 07:27:39 AM »
i have been thinking about dry sumping my M42, but how easy is it to do, and can you just make up abit of ali plate to go in place of the sump, or would i have to buy a proppa one, also i was thinking i can make up a tank no problem, so the only thing i would have to buy is the pump and lines.

You would need a windage tray/scraper, oil pan, pump, tank, lines, fittings, filter setup, and cooler. It would probably be at least $2000 in parts cost alone. It costs about $5000 for a small block chevy in a circle track or road race sedan and there are a ton of brands available.
I'd suggest trying to get a used setup from a competition car. Maybe someone knows of a racing class that used dry sumped M42's. Experimenting can be very expensive when the failure is in the oil system.

What problem are you trying to solve here?  This would be very very expensive and IMO not accomplish much.

well i was thinking i could do it cheaper, lines off ebay should'nt be too much, i can make the tank up fine, a cooler is cheap, a pump is probably going to be the most expensive bit, i just wondered if the bit that goes in place of the sump had to be special or can you just use abit of 4-5mm aluminium straight onto the bottom of the engine, with fittings in it for the hoses

I just happened to be browsing this site and saw a dry sump oil pan for an m42.  $575 for just the pan FYI.

Not worth it unless you are pulling over 1.0 Lateral G's. That usually only happens with at least R-compounds or 225mm wide tires on an E30.
