Hello,
I'm new to the group, but I was a lurker for a while. There's a lot of good information on this forum. I have a 1990 318is, which used to be a 325is until I tore out the M20 so I was no longer cursed with too many cylinders.

I installed an M44. I hope that's okay here. It's basically the same engine as M42, but you all know that. It came from a low mileage 1997 Z3 1.9 I bought for parts. I also bought a 1991 318i (M42) for the other parts I needed. I still have the M42 from that car, so I still do officially fit in here.
I kept the M44 OBD2 and it’s the TLEV version so I also installed all the emissions equipment so that it’s California legal (cat, SAP, O2 sensors, charcoal canister with shut-off valve, fuel pressure sensor, & 3/2 valve with FPR). I installed the E30 fan clutch & blade rather than the electric fan though and I wired up a harness to use the E30 ignition coils. I considered going the COP route, but I prefer the OEM look better. I replaced all the gaskets, hoses, coolant pipes, and PCV. I used the engine mounts (with new E30 rubbers), oil pan, gearbox (replaced seals), driveshaft, airbox, wiring covers, etc from the E30. I also installed a new DMF & clutch, the Supersprint exhaust for the 318is, and a 4.10 Torsen LSD from a 2000 Z3 2.8. Hopefully it’ll be a reliable daily driver for me. I have over 1000 miles on it now and I love it.
