noise above 2800 RPMS....

Hey guys, new to the forum..

I came from VWs so this is all new territory for me. I bought my 318is about 2 months ago, have only driven it about 200 miles. The motor itself has 127k on it (roughly, im not sure the PO put it in when the old motor blew). Anyways, he threw a Midas-ish muffler on the car and it always sounded tingy. I cut it out and had a new muffler welded in which is much deeper and quieter than the old one. Now i notice a noise from my engine that wasn't as relevant to me before.

When driving on the streets or freeway.. when i get about 2500ish RPMS, i notice a sort of ticking noise? The only way I can explain it is that it almost sounds like an exhaust leak though there is no exhaust leak. It quiets up again around 3100 if im cruising but if i open it up it will start sounding again. Almost like a tick but it doesnt do it consistently. You cannot hear it when you sit there and rev it up, only when there is a load on it.

Anyone have similar problems? Kind of getting paranoid and am about to delve into changing out the timing chain...

thanks guys

here is the car in question:

very nice looking car. hate the wheels tho.. you should package them up and ship them to me so i can dispose of them for you;)

the noise will either be lifters, or an inector. sounds more ilke a lifter, and lots of us have that noise on the board. lack of oilign to the lifter, or a worn out lifter will do this.

on a noise related note: if the po didn't replace the tensioner, or if you don't know the answer to that, then replace it as well.

Could be exhaust shielding above the muffler at the rear.  IM inspecting mine today, seems to be rattling around back there, very tingly noises....

a shop today told me that since the cat was changed, thats what is making it sound louder. I guess the factory one was much larger..

I do want to replace the tensioner and check out my oil situation just in case... it just doesnt sound like a cat issue to me.....
