To turbo or not
« on: April 11, 2017, 11:38:25 PM »
Hi everyone.

I have done much reading here and other places. I've gone through so many posts that I'm not sure where my thoughts are now. In June of 2016 I purchased a 1991 318is. Decent running at the time and now a bit better after replacing many failed taped vacuum hoses. While the original owner I felt was fairly truthful in my purchase he mostly had the car worked on by someone else. It's claimed the clutch is original at 195,000miles. I'm not sure about this as this is my first E30. I realize if I turbo, the motor is coming out and getting some checks, studs, and refreshing during this process. I've read so many times to get rid of this motor and swap a 6. That just makes me want to stick with the original that much more. I am however after a bit more umph. Don't get me wrong. When I bought it, it was completely stock. A little rust which I cut out and fixed. I painted it it in my driveway which resulted in a 2 foot car. Diamond Schwartz. Closer than 2 feet reveals my fails. Interior will be last. It now has coilovers and new rims. Everything else is stock. Now is it worth it to turbo. I have read about Jake @classic daily and have even inquired on a price. It seems reasonable to me for what he supplies. I'm not a engine management guy. I don't have the time to put in to learn and tune the car. I have a few cars and this is my "weekend fun" car. I'd like it to keep up with my X5 4.8. I will never sell this car. Since the day I bought it I enjoy driving it so much. Money in I'm not that worried about getting out of. So I'm interested in opinions of owners that have had their car for a while and have done or wished they'd done type of scenarios. I will appreciate all opinions as I have read too much at this point. Well, with the exceptions of the smart as_'s.

Thanks,
Geoff

Jakes kit is a good way to get you up and running with minimal issues. Over time you can easily upgrade parts to make improvements. The kit will provide plenty of oomph to keep you happy for a while.

Biggest room for improvement with the kit would be a standalone engine ECU. There are plenty of people here who can help you with learning to tune :)

Another "bolt on" option is the DASC roots supercharger kit. They come up for sale fairly frequently.
